A Statistical Study on Divorce in Korea


Abstract
This study was carried out to analyze the status of divorce and the general characteristics concerned with divorce in Korea by using the available Census Data, Vital Statistics, and Judicial Yearbook during 1972-1989.
The major results are summarized as follows:
1. The proportion of registered divorce in the estimated number of divorce increased from 62.4% in 1972 to 71.1% in 1989 while the rate of registered marriage was up from 23.1% to 77.1%.
2. Among the total divorce cases in the Office of Court Adminstration¢¥s data, the proportion of divorce by mutual agreement was 94.1% while the rate of divorce by suit was 5.8% in 1972. The rate of divorce by suit had been 3.8 times in 1989 compared with 1972.
3. Between 1972 and 1989, the crude divorce rate in an estimated data had been 2.8 times from 0.38 to 1.08, and the divorce rate in the Court¢¥s data had been 3.1 times from 0.66 in 1972 to 2.06 in 1989.
4. The largest age group of the divorced population was 30-34 age group in male while 25-29 age group in female during 1972 and 1989.
5. The average age at divorce was 35.7 in men and 31.0 in women for 1972, and 36.4, 32.3 in 1989. It could be assumed that the result is due to an increasing age at marriage as well as the growing rate of divorce.
6. During 1970 and 1985, the mean duration of marriage declined from 8.3 years to 7.2years. The most divorce occurred between four and five years after marriage.
7. The major reason for divorce was domestic differences as 64.8% in 1972 and 83.9% in 1989. And a false to one¢¥s partner was the first reason in people who file a suit for divorce during 1970 and 1989.
